Skier Stability

1. Stability is often confused with "balance". A good skier is always out of balance - but stable. Skiing is dynamic and stability is maintained through accelerations.

2. The force which builds up against the "outside" ski in the turn/arc, is called a countervailing force. This force is achieved by the ski design and permits the skier to accelerate - changing both speed and direction.
3. The skier must resist all temptation to twist or turn the ski as this breaks down the countervailing force provided by the ski. When a good solid countervailing force is allowed to build up then the skier becomes remarkably stable - yet very much "out of balance" - this being why skiing is so interesting.
