1. Stability is often confused with
"balance". A good skier is always out of balance - but stable. Skiing is dynamic
and stability is maintained through accelerations.
2. The force which builds up against the
"outside" ski in the turn/arc, is called a countervailing force. This force is
achieved by the ski design and permits the skier to accelerate - changing both speed and
direction.
3. The skier must resist all temptation to
twist or turn the ski as this breaks down the countervailing force provided by the ski.
When a good solid countervailing force is allowed to build up then the skier becomes
remarkably stable - yet very much "out of balance" - this being why skiing is so
interesting.
